In Reply to: BBQ Dandelions in a Poke Salad?!?!??? posted by Ally's Mom on March 23, 2001 at 20:23:42:
OK, I started this, so I guess it's up to me to answer some of the questions... The Mason-Dixon line is roughly the Ohio River, and yes, dandelions do grow all over Dixie...
Poke Sallet, or salit, or salad is the young, tender leaves of the Poke plant. Poke grows up to 8 feet tall from a perennial root, has a purple stem and purple berries. Can't eat anything except young, tender leaves. All else is toxic.
West Kentucky is the BBQ capital of the world. Best there is, and yes, HD, the sauce is vinegar based, and applied only after the BBQ is finished. To a real barbeque fan, you don't barbecue anything, barbeque is the result, and you eat it. (The best is pulled pork. Before anybody asks, that means pulled apart after cooking.)
Grits are ground white corn which has had the hull removed with lye. The resulting cornmeal is cooked with water. Eat it with butter, salt and pepper, or milk and sugar.
I'll leave the 90% lean beef to Harry and his Dad to explain.
This is undoubtedly more than you ever wanted to know on these subjects, but I hope it helps.
John
