I once saw an iguana who got a nasty burn from laying on a hot rock one winter. It belongs to a friend of mine and when she heard about me having Yago warned me against using one. I agree, but before I got Yago all set up, her enclosure was way too cold. I asked my friend to share her hot rock with me (she hates the thing so she gave it to me) and I placed a kid's cardboard shoe box wrapped with newspaper on top of the rock.(it's taller than the rock so it forms a sort of hot air pocket- or whatever you call it) Turns out Yago wouldn't move from there. Now that she's got her light fixtures and everything, I can't make myself take it out because she roams her enclosure but always comes back to rest on top of it. I feel it's her "security blanket". It hasn't given me any problems, but I am careful about the newspaper and cardboard not touching the rock. I don't know if this helps, I'm new at all this, listen to what the experts have to say before listening to me, but it's still an idea. Good luck! Lisette

: My three month old rhino is undergoing the acclimation process and has taken to hiding much of the day. Since I use lighting to heat his enclosure(100 watt UVA Zoo Med daybulb and Zoo Med 5.0 UVB), and he's not spending a lot of time basking, this is cause for concern. He's eating, but not quite as much as I would like. I'm concerned that he's not staying warm enough to maximally stimulate his appetite. I've never used heat rocks or under tank heating devices due to the possibility of injury if these become too hot. I'm now considering getting a small(6" x 8") under tank heater to heat his hiding/sleeping area and hopefully stimulate his appetite and activity. What is the general consensus regarding under tank heaters? Is there a recommended type or brand that is considered safe? Please respond with your opinions and experiences. Thanks!
