I've noticed some bad blood between iguana lovers and their vets on this forum, and just wanted to clarify... Vets are not bad people!!!
Granted, there are a number who don't know the first thing about reptiles, but most aren't really trained to deal with them. If you need a good vet for your Ig, try an exotics vet. They do exist, and many will come to your home since their practices are generally small and mobile.
Remember, vets aren't like MDs... although there is only one species of human, there are far, far, far more species of animals out there than that. So find a vet who specializes in or at least knows alot about your pet. Ask before you make an appointment, most will be forthcoming about their knowledge or refer you elsewhere (those that don't are probably bad vets anyhow, in dealing with the owners if not the pets). Ask area Ig owners who they use, they typically know who prescribes the right stuff and who tells you to feed them dog food...
Above all, when you do find a vet who knows his iguanas from his geckos, follow his advice! It's always acceptable to double-check him with other knowledgable people or vets, but nothing upsets a good vet more than to see his treatments ignored and an animal die because of the bad advice of a less knowledable person. Home remidies to save money are not always a good idea...
That, by the way, does not pertain to this forum! Most people here come across as very well-versed in iguana-ese, and I do not mean to question your knowledge, this being one of the places I'd recommend to double-check a fishy-sounding vet's prescription. (assuming you rely on more than one person's opinion)
Perhaps I'm a bit biased with both a brother and a sister-in-law who are vets, but... Well, I promise you neither of them would come off so pompous as certain other so-called vets on the forum, nor would they claim to know about something they did not. My brother, incidentally, owned an iguana for several years before donating it to a biology class for further care when he moved to a new home.
So... happy vet hunting!
Best,
Clinton
