: Hi Clinton,
: I'm not sure I've seen actual "bad blood" out here. I HAVE, however, seen facts that iguana owners have taken their igs to a vet who turned out to be less than qualified to handle an ig. True, there is only one human species. But there are MANY different MD specialists. You generally won't find an ENT trying to diagnose cardiovascular ailments. HOWever, for some strange reason, there evidently are vets who don't like to admit that they are in over their heads when it comes to at least iguanas if not herps in general. Hopefully, as you point out, they are few and far between. Unfortunately, there also seens to be a shortage of vets specializing in herps as well. I just ran across an excellent example a few weeks ago. Long story short - Ig was attacked by the family cat. Ig lost an eye and part of it's face. Vet apparently, from the pictures, did little to assist any healing process that may have taken place and, in fact, suggested feeding dog food to help the ig recuperate. One of the "quirks" that the ig developed after the accident is that it likes to/cannot help sticking it's tongue through the hole in it's face. That, in my opinion and admittedly without knowing anytyhing about the vet in question, tells me that that particular vet was not qualified.
: Excellent advice as far as searching for a vet. There is nothing better than word-of-mouth advertising especially when it comes to something as important as medical care be it human or animal. Make sure that you do enough research to know whether or not the vet you choose is actually qualified to treat your ig/gex/snake etc. Don't be afraid to, in effect, interview a potential vet before you make an appointment. If they are at all hesitant to answer questions regarding their background and training they may not be ther vet for you. Please correct me if I'm wrong, Clinton, as you obviously have the blood running in you...;)
