the main source to contact salmonella is by the feces, and its blood. If your iguana doesn't have a clean vent, and poops around the house, then there is a problem. Usually the tongue won't cause any problems. Most (if not all) of us have been bitten and scratched by iguanas, yet we are fine! The trick in all this is HYGENE!
For example, after my iguana would nap one the couch, i would sray a bit of Lysol on the sofa (when he left) just to make sure. You can bathe your iguana before roaming, so it will be al clean, and possibly poop so it wont cause accidents around the house!
As for the cats, it's all about hygene. Cats and dogs live together, yet you rarely (if ever) hear of dogs contacting toxo. And, i have seen cats and dogs interact with monitor lizards! Mainly through contact with feces and blood there should be a fear of either animal to get sick.
If you keep your iguana cage clean EVERYDAY the risks of salmonella are minimized. Always wash your hands after handling an iguana/reptile.
I have heard of a dog that used to eat a lizards feces, yet the it never got sick! Nasty uh?
If you keep both your cats and iguana healthy and clean, u shouldnt have any problems. Just keep on hand a Lysol spray or Lysol moist towels.
Im sure someone has a better reply (i never had cats) but this is pretty much all that there is to it.
You posted an excellent question, since i have never heard of this topic! I'll look into some books and tell u more.

: I was referred by someone on the acmepet herp board for more help with this question. I have 2 lizards (Iguana and Bearded Dragon) and 2 purebred cats. I really want to let my iguana do a supervised roam in our house. I would of course lock up the cats during this roam. My question is since lizards are know potential carriers of salmonella and cats are known carriers of toxoplasmosis, is there any risk of them contracting eachothers stuff by being in contact with the same environment? The iguana puts his toung on everything and the cats rub on and smell everything. I really think the iguana would love the occasional roam but I dont want any harm to come to either the cats or the lizard. Any advice would be great!
