Final questions on cage

I am planning to stain and varnish Lizzy's enclosure. Is there any special kind of stain I need? I would prefer to use the stain/varnish in one step. How long do I need to let it dry and air before she can be in it? Only the top cover and frame around the edges are wood. The rest is plexiglass.
