We only stained the outside of the enclosure just to be safe......

I'm thinking the fumes can be aggrivated by the heat and that can't be good. We used "Minwax" and the can says "penetrates, stains and seals". (bought it at Walmart if I'm not mistaken)Then we let it air out for 24 hours (windows open, etc.) before putting the rest together. Better to be safe than sorry.
