If Lizzy is going to come in contact with any of the wood at all then you're going to want to seal it good. While the stain and seal method might work I've always been told to use 4 or five coats of polyurethane whenever building a wooden enclosure. Certain types of wood (cedar, pine, and more) can be toxic to igs. Using that many coats of poly not only ensures that the wood is sealed but it also makes any cleanup that much easier as well. Just make sure that the enclosure airs for a good 4-6 hours after the final coat and then get it up to operating temp/humidity for a day to make sure that there aren't any problems with it....
Good luck and keep us posted...;)
