I know a lot of you will be mad at me for saying this... but this is my opinion only... please remember that it is just my observation.
I dont think pet stores will ever stop selling igs (reptiles in general). See, the thing is, they dont CARE about the animal. They dont CARE to see photos of the ig in its enclosure. All they care about is the almighty dollar. I hate to say that it will not change. If one pet store stops selling them, yet another store in the area remains selling them - then nothing was accomplished. And how long will the other pet shop not sell them when they see they are losing money & customers?
The problem goes FAR beyond just igs. Look at all the dogs & cats mistreated & living in shelters and on the streets. People bought them for their kids because they thought they were cute & when it turned out to be expensive & time consuming they dropped it off in an alley. Pet stores will never stop selling cats & dogs either. And, I live by a stable that has horseback riding. Can I tell you about the SORES, festering bloody sores, on these horses from saddles that were old & hurt the horse. Or the fact that they never groom them & throw a saddle on & work the horse from sunrise to late at night? To her, when a horse comes up lame, she isnt worried about the animal - she is worried about the loss of money. I confronted her & was told - this is a business. I am in it to make money. Great - so we spread the word about how they are abused at this place - but people still go. Same deal - people will still go to Petco - people will still buy igs - and they will still end up in shelters & foster homes & dead. It's a wide spread problem over all species of animals. And its a human race problem. Its a problem that people arent being raised with enough common sense or sense of responsibility.
The only thing I can offer, is education. All I can do is educate people on HOW to care for their animal, cat, dog, ig, horse, rodent... and hope that it makes a difference. And hopefully if I can get to them before they buy one, I can change their mind unless they are serious. The only thing pet shops might do if we pressure them, is to carry the proper care info & house the igs they sell in a proper enclosure. I just think that we are looking at this on too large of a scale. If you cant abolish the sale of iguanas - then maybe we can get them to do it with a bit more education under their belts.
Please dont get mad at me... I love my ig, I love all my animals. I moved my horse from the stable 3 houses away to a stable over an hour away so she gets proper care. I have adopted stray dogs & cats... paid for their helath care & then adopted them out like so many of you do with igs...
But I am just trying to see a way that we can start on a smaller scale to change things. I agree with you all 100% that it needs to be stopped (animal abuse on all levels) - but society has proven time & time again that money comes before morals.
Its a sad world - but we can try to make a difference cant we?
