I agree with you, Kimberly. Small-scale stuff is really all I think one person CAN realistically do. That's why I'm trying to get the iguana from the Orem Petco. Sure, she's only one Iguana, and on a big scale, one could argue that she doesn't really matter in the long run to the pet trade, but what I'm trying to do for her matters to HER in the short run.

I don't think any of us can get Petco to completely stop carrying iguanas on our own, but if enough of us do something towards that end, who knows where it could lead? Everything starts somewhere--even the most monumental tasks. (Sorry, I'm not trying to sound like a motivational speaker or anything.) :)

I'm seriously considering taking the job the manager at Petco offered me yesterday. I talked with "Ig Chick" (great lady, by the way) on the phone last night, and she gave me some great ideas. I think I want to go in and tell him that I'll be their Iguana Education Specialist or something similar. I'll go into schools and tell kids how much care iguanas really take. I'll be the person who sells iguanas to customers, but only AFTER they understand that iguanas aren't a 10 dollar lizard to be discarded when the kids get bored of it. I'll them how to truly care for Iguanas, and I could prepare real "Iguana Starter Kits" with all the essential things they really DO need, rather than those pathetic starter kits which come with a 20 gallon tank which is shrink-wrapped with some astro turf carpet inside, a hot rock (gasp) and some calcium supplements, and which are labeled, "All your iguana needs!"

It may be only a tiny position, and I may only reach a handful of potential iguana owners, but hey--it's something.

I agree with you: we have to start on a small scale and move up from there. I realize that my corner of the world is small, and that what I'm trying to do here in Utah could be seen as insignificant, but it IS a start.
Thanks for your insight, your opinions, and your intelligent post.
Sincerely,
Diana
