Hello, all
I was honestly quite upset when I read HD's post about not having "medical" discussions and offering medical advice because there are perhaps those that would not understand and/or would use the discussion as a reason to treat his/her iguana him/herself and not consult a vet at all. So, on the off chance that such a fool would do something like that, we are choosing to assume that most of the participants of this board are idiots, and we are wanting to censor what we are saying so that nothing bad will come of it? I promote being careful in any messages that I post, particularly if I don't know who I am posting to. I always ad the advice to see a vet, and I have never heard anyone claim that it is better to use the advice given instead of seeing a vet! Ever! And I'm pretty d@mn sure that no one would! Once, quite sometime ago, I left the IML, at least for the time being, because a newbie posted saying that the discussion was over his head and confusing him. The discussion was removed from the list, and such "advanced" (using the word lightly) was rarely seen on the IML again. One thing I have always appreciated on this board was the open atmosphere, one on which the "newbies" and the "old-schoolers" can mingle comfortably, where newbies could be helped and more advanced discussions could take place, and that included medical discussions. Now, Harry's Dad, usually I agree with most of your strong opinions, and I like and respect you. But on this particular issue, I am going to take a stand against your thoughts. I thoroughly disagree that we should have to move medical discussions off the board, onto private email or an email list. There will always be idiots, anywhere, that will take advice wrong or use it in a detrimental way. Neither you or anyone can stop this sort of thing from occasionally happening. I believe that as long as we qualify our posts by advising veterinary care and to use our advice wisely, we are doing all we can, there. I do not believe that ignorance or promotion of censorship is the answer to this particular problem. We have moved into the era of "covering our @ss" and it's starting to feel to me like we're moving past that into "don't say it and we won't *have* to cover our @sses." I simply cannot abide that. I would hate to see such a thing happen to our wonderful forum. If the webmaster were to tell us to desist post anything medical, I would perhaps be more open to it, although I don't think I would like it from him, either. Still, I find the idea of censoring each other even worse. I was also more than a little offended on Cliff's list of things that he feels is common misunderstandings amoung those who participate here. It seems like there has become a collective consciousness that everyone who posts here is an utter idiot until they prove otherwise. Call me naive, but I don't think that is the case.
I apologize if I have hurt or offended anyone, and HD, I want you to know that this is not a personal affront to you. I still like and respect you, but this time, my opinion differs strongly with yours and I needed to let that be know. I hope that this does not cause a flame-war or huge upset, but I strongly feel that the entire idea is wrong. Thank you for letting me speak my piece.
Best,
Jamie/JBug
