Iguana's spikes grow in unevenly

My iguana seems healthy, except that the spikes along his back and tail seem to grow in unevenly. There will be several tall ones right next to short ones, followed again by tall ones in no particular pattern. Some even seem to have constriction marks around them, as if he must have gone through a period of poor nutrition. In addition, the very tip of his spikes fall off on occasion. (He doesn't seem to notice.) Has anyone out there experienced similar things with their Iguanas? Does anyone know what could be causing this? If so, what can I do to help him? I've read Melissa Kaplan's articles on nutrition, and am trying to be very good about following her diet plan. Can any one relate to this problem, or steer me to some information on the subject?
