I had that happen to my Spike too. Then one day when I was misting him I noticed what you're describing, and it was retained spike sheds for my not-so-little guy. With the help of some warm water, a little rubbing to losen them and then I pulled them off. Since then they've grown in straight and no more broken spikes. I 'spose you could use some sort of oil instead of water?? Not sure though.
