Drake is a strange creature

Hey!

First, let me say thanks to everyone for the advice and comments. It's nice to be on a posting forum again, and still nicer that the posters are well-behaved. You people tempt me to re-instate my BBS as an internet site.

In any case, Drake has thrown me for a loop on this one. Drake LOVES his head and neck to be scratched. However, if he sees me reach for him, he attempts to attack, including a right nasty bite. I did discover, trying to hand-feed him, that anything green near his face will cause him to close his eyes. With his eyes closed, I can reach in and he'll sit there and let me skritch for a while before snapping his eyes open and reacting negatively. I have a length of collard green stalk (dried) that's excellent for prepping him for petting. I'm perfectly willing to absorb the claws in the hands and arms, and the tail whippings, but that bite has me concerned (can't say why - I have some deep, nasty scars from the claws, whereas the bite healed farily quickly and completely). Does anyone have any tips for methods to calm him down? I don't want to have to use gloves, as it reduces my judgment of how effectively I'm holding him), but I'd also like free use of my appendages...

Thanks,

Dave
