Well, we have an incadesant lamp for heat, and a full spectrum flourescent lamp for UVA and B. Both of which we leave on for around 12 hours a day. The health of our ig has improved DRAMATICALLY since we "rescued" him. So, I don't know about the 8 hours thing, 12 seems to work fine for us. Hope this helps!!!
