If anyone has read this on a different list, sorry for being redundant. I can't believe the difficulties that I'm having with Skunka still. First of all. she is still gravid - she was obviously not feeling good a month ago, and the vet gave her some calcium to take 2xs a day, and an anti-septic scrub for a wound on her arm. That was fine, although I had to give her the medicine on bread, or else wrestle her for 5 minutes before she would give in and lap it up. Her arm was improving alot, and I took her for a follow up 3 weeks later. That was 2 1/2 weeks ago, and also the last day that I actually saw her eat anything. Even before we went to the vet, her poo was just urates - no dark solids. And at the vet she really fought us when he looked in her mouth and when we trimmed her nails. That night I gave her a bath, and starting the next day, she seemed to be moving around less.I had a couple of days of long hours, but I noticed that she didn't seem to be roaming very much, and when I really got to spend some time with her, I saw that her leg was bothering her more, even though it still looked improved. And a week after her follow up visit, she was hobbling on 3 legs. So, off we go to a different vet, who gives her an anti-biotic shot, and some baytril to give her every other day. She recommended that I start force feeding her baby food, and continue the calcium, and if she didn't begin eating in a few days, to take her back. But since she's gravid, I don't really feel that her eating is that much of an issue. Oh, and at the time we went to her follow up visit, the vet gave me a replacement bottle of calcium, because I had finished the first one. This liquid is a lighter color, and I think that she is even more determined not to take it, like maybe the taste is different or something. I'm almost at the end of my rope, because if I try to give her the calcium that her body so desperately needs, she fights me severely. Not only is she creating a lot of stress (for herself and especially for me!), but add to that an injured arm, which will most likely get hurt more from the struggling. I just don't know how to get her to swallow that calcium?! I had been giving her a bite of bread, but she no longer wants that - and when I show her any kind of food, she ignores me! Maybe I'm doing it all wrong, but even the drops I force between her 'lips' end up dribbling down her face, and to make me more insane, she will look at me and slowly close her eyes, like she's saying "you can't make me!" I'm almost ready to give up! I go away guilty because you would think I was trying to make her drink poison or something! And to make matters worse, I'm supposed to start giving her anti-biotics too?! HOW?? The only good sign is that she still has plenty of strength to fight her evil, medicine- wielding mommy. Sorry for venting, but if anyone has any suggestions on forcing medicine into a 4' baby dinosaur, please let me know.
Toni (who just spent 30 minutes trying to get 1cc of calcium into Skunka)
Skunka (I'd rather wear it than drink it!)
