With the introduction of iguanas into the wild in this country, we will see more and more of these reports of people catching iguanas and wanting to rescue them. There's already a few places in Florida that are being over run by wild caught iguanas, that people have found. We need to just live with the fact that we will have iguanas in the wild here and educate the public to NOT capture these iguanas, but leave them be. And with this, have the understanding that nature is nature, and when death comes to an iguana by way of another animal, it's life.
I view ( at least in my case ) my duty is to protect the imported iguanas as best I can (rescue), but as far as wild released ones, I would choose NOT to get involved and let nature take it's course.
This brings me to another point, about a year ago I considered having a micro chip installed in Lola. Now with the up-spring of more iguanas found in the wild, I'm starting to rethink this idea again. Although we live in a climate that would not allow iguanas to live year round, it still might help to idenify our iguanas if for some reason they got loose and were found by someone else. One problem with this, is WHO would ever check an iguana for a chip??? Chances are slim that anyone would even consider checking for such a thing on an iguana. But there is hope, if we started educating the public, ANIMAL rescue departments and vets to the fact that iguana owners are now using micro chips, maybe we could have an edge on tracking and recovering our iguanas, if for some reason they escaped. If this was a standard it would help with the problem in Florida, when iguana came into a rescue group, they would check for a chip and know whether it's a pet or wild iguana. Making it a required law in Florida,California and Texas to have a micro chip installed in all owned iguanas!
Can it be installed into an iguana? The answer is YES, I have already talked with my Vet about installing them in ours and he assured me there's no problem, it's a simple process, takes about 5 minutes and is fairly cheap.
What's everyones opinion????
