just FYI for any + all ... here is my post from the Herp Health forum: (keep in mind that this is specifically about Baytril)
i asked M. Kaplin and the resident vet at the VIN forum about the effectiveness varying with route of administration of Baytril ... and these are their replies ...
~~~~~~~~~~~
From M. Kaplin:
Actually, Baytil (enrofloxacin) has had some pharmacokinetics done with reptiles - one of the few drugs to have been done so...and is equally effective both orally and IM.
..... It is one of the few drugs that is just as effective given orally as well as by injection. Baytril injectable can be given orally (though it is very bitter); not all injectables can be given orally, so do not try this with other drugs without first talking to your veterinarian. Baytril also comes in pill form. ....
One of the things that makes Baytril - oral or injectible - or any other antibiotic work better in reptiles is to be sure to keep the thermal gradient up. ....
Sources for this information come from Roger J. Klingenberg DVM's chapter on Therapeutics (in Mader, Reptile Medicine and Surgery) and a paper on therapeutics he presented back in 1994 to the ARAV conference that year.
and from Dr. Ken Harkewicz VMD:
To add to Melissa's comments. Yes, both oral and injectable Baytril are absorbed about the sane given orally or as an injection, depending on the animal and it's condition.
With iguanas, I will usually start with a single injection to build a blood level quickly, then switch to oral administration. If the iguana had say a severe gastroenteritis or had gut stasis (secondary to an obstruction) I would choose the injectable form, as the oral would not be absorbed quickly enough.
the whole point is ... if igs need to be on long-term Baytril, it can be given orally and will be just as effective ... (me + iZ are doin' happy dances over that!!!!)
about preventing abcesses and/or tissue irritation ... the peeps at VIN also told me that Baytril can be diluted 1:1 with any sterile saline ... and given sub-q may be less irritating than IM ...
what i've done the last couple times i had to inject iZ, was insert the needle fairly deep into the muscle and then slowly inject as i withdraw the needle to spread out the liquid more throughout the muscle rather than in just one spot ... it seemed to help ... seemed like the injection itself wasn't as painful, but also didn't seem to irritate the tissue as much ...
eeeeeeeeew *yech* !!! i hate giving shots and i am SOOOO glad i don't have to anymore!!!! (*knock wood!*)
hugs + headbobs!!!
