When I received my first iguana, I didn't know much about them and didn't take any precautions whatsoever. I kissed him on the mouth, he licked me there too! I would handle food and him at the same time (eating while holding him-- giving him a bite) I only disinfected the tub once per week-- I just rinsed it out every time he pooped. I rarely washed my hands after handling him (he was always kept very clean-- and didn't gross me out like hairy animals that I immediately washed my hands after touching).
I am not saying this was smart behavior by any means (makes me cringe a bit now) but even when my immune system was weakened with a cold--- I never got sick once (nor did anyone else who came over our house in the last 8 years) And we did have some children over.
I try to be much better about it now that I am aware of the potential danger (and especially to get into good practice for having children-- I am worried about it).
The fact is-- I do not think that I can catch it from any of the reptiles I've kept-- because I did everything wrong and never caught it (and I had salamonella poisoning from my college cafeteria a year before I had my first ig so I KNOW WHAT it feels like-- and I was hospitalized)
So even though I will be super careful once I have kids (don't want to risk it) I think the whole thing is blown way out of proportion. I wonder what condition some of these igs are in that give people salomella-- perhaps they are not kept clean (covered in feces).
