: Using the numbers stated in the article:
: if 2500 cases are reported, then 2% of those are allegedly retile related
: if 1500 cases are reported, then 4% are reptile related
: if only 1% of all cases are reported then, using their numbers: then there are 250, 000 cases with 6000 reptile related or again: 2%
: if 10% of cases are reported, then there are 25, 000 cases, or again 2% reptile related.
: The question should be: what is causing the other 98% of salmonella cases that are not reptile related.
I agree with you totally. I have a 3yr old and 6 yr old. They love my turtles and iguana, but I never let them handle them!
They did pet Ziggi one day, just couldn't resist, but made sure they washed their hands afterwards. I have kept turtles for
6 years and never had a problem. Always wash the cage accessories in the sink(where else is there), but clean sink with clorox cleanup
and always use anti-bacterial soap. Reptiles can be very safe when around anyone if safe cleaning measures are kept.
The other 96-98% of salmonella is probably from undercooked or contaminated meat, people are more likely to contract bacteria from
this than exposure to captive reptiles!
Just my .02.
