As herp lovers we need to use our most important weapon to change situations like this. Our wallets.
Pet stores do not make any money off of live animal sales. The profits come from dry goods. Live animals get people into the store, where they may buy an animal and the $200 with of stuff needed to keep it. Believe me when I say - especially for large chaines - they literally don't care one bit for the animals. Live, die, suffer, do well - it's all the same to them if the site of live critters brings one more cusotmer into the store.
The answer - don't go into the store. DON'T rescue animals (hard, I know), don't even buy cat food. If you live out in the middle of nowhere, but are reading this right now, then you can buy your supplies online. Pets.com has a very good catalog of reptile supplies, as well as cat/dog/small pet/bird/fish stuff. And if you can't get it there, you can get it from Big Apple Herp. A lot of dry goods can be found a grocery stores or places like Wal-Mart.
Tell everyone you know to boycott retail pet stores that sell live animals - PARTICULARLY DOGS!!!!! If you have a really good independent store in your area, support it, even if you are paying more. Near where I live a PetCo opened up just down the street from a Pet Supplies Plus (which doesn't have anything live but fish). I ask people outside of Petco why they shop there instead of PSP. "They have a lot of stuff." "The prices are lower." "They have animals to look at." So the marketing works. But a lot of people look surprised when I tell them about PetCo's policy towards their live animals, and I have successfully turned at least a dozen people away from PetCo and down the street to PSP.
Just because your local PetCo's manager does a halfway decent job and "really tries", the store is part of the corporation and should still be boycotted.
Be vocal, be picky, be willing to pay more, travel more, order online. We are the ones who can make the change - the stores never, ever will.
