On the subject of tail breakage.....

It is my understanding that iguanas have between 4 or 5 breakable sections located in their tail, which are meant to be able to break. If a break happens from grabbing the iguana by the tail, chances are it will break at one of these points. If it's an injury from something else, such as being closed in a door, it may have been broken between one of these sections. With this latter accident, the tail may or may not grow back, but the chances are much more improved if the break is in one of the natural breaking areas, for re-growth.
I've talked with our Vet about Lola's tail in length, he has offered to perform surgery by cutting her tail in one of the closest sections to where her ring shed is. ( A little history on Lola) Lola's previous owner, didn't watch Lola's tail ( which had broke) during one of her sheds, the result of which, caused Lola to have ring shed at the end of her tail. Ring shed as some of you know, is where the old skin doesn't shed and begins to build up as the iguana has numerous sheds. If this isn't taken care of during the first shed, there's a good chance Ring Shed will happen. Since Lola did wind up having Ring Shed, her tail never grew back.
The option I talked with the Vet about, does show a very good chance Lola's tail would grow back; although we have decided not to have it done.
I don't know for sure where these sections are located at in an iguanas tail, but my guess would be they'd be spaced out evenly along the whole tail.
For anyone that has an iguana with a tail that's not growing back, this is a possible option you could look at if you are interested in your iguana having a full length tail again. NOTE: A regrown tail doesn't look like the original one did, the scales and color will most likely be different.
