Like Kati said, be patient and persistant. Your iguana doesn't know that you're not going to make a meal out of him. Try to pick him up from underneath because an upper-body grab is similiar to what a predator would do.
Also, try gently rubbing around its eyes and eventually work your way to the back of its head. Iggies love this and will close one eye and cock their head to the side.
If your iguana lashes its tail, hisses or attempts to bite you, ignore it. Leaving it alone will only be encouraging this behavior. Remember that iguanas brains work in a "Cause and Effect" way.
