Iguanas less than a year old do need protein. I think that providing the variety in diet that an iguana would recieve in the wild is impossible so I wouldn't rule all animal protein out (or any other good food). And wild iguana juveniles do consume animal protein. Dog food can be a good source of protein for young iguana's and they seem to like it. Offer it as only 25% or so of a meal 1-2 times per week and you'll never overdo it. Mine also liked to eat scrambled eggs or small pieces or cook chicken or beef. However, these were given as treats and not as the main diet.
Kenny is probably right to suggest that people shouldn't rely on dog food but only because some people will feed it exclusively. I would not feed it to any iguana over 1 year old. Don't forget to make sure the rest of his diet is wholesome as well. And, don't forget the protein rich vegetables like beans. My ig loves lima beans, red beans, and green beans. All great sources of protein.
One more thing...no offense Kenny...but I would listen to the recommendation of a veterinarian who has examined your ig in person over someone on the internet who you don't know and has never seen your ig. If your vet suggested it--try it. If you get him examined regularly he can spot any problems.
Good Luck,
Jason
