: Well, maybe not for igs, but has anyone ever tried using a Habitrail set up for smaller lizards? My hamsters have 3 mods, set up on 3 levels of the bookcase, interconnected by a veritable maze of tubes and junctions. There are several playhouses and sleeping dens incorporated into the mess. It seems this would allow the mods to be temp. regulated and have plenty of room to excercise and move around while still being safely enclosed and as an added bonus for the owner, in plain sight!
: What you guys think?
I had a friend who liked to do things a litte on the wacky side.He was into geckos, particularly day geckos, flying geckos and house geckos. He grew bored with seeing them just sit on the walls and plants so he decided to to set up something for them to do.He was a plumber,so he used this clear, rigid tubing similar(but not as thick) as PVCHe drilled plenty of holes in the tubes for air flow..He constructed a maze of tubes with larger junctions made possible by square water traps. He set this on top of the geckos permanent home to see if they would go for it,making holes in the screen to allow access into the tubes.
Well the little boogers loved it.I mean they loved it.They ran around like maniacs in there. The coolest thing was when a cricket found its way into the maze and the chase was on.The cricket became a fugitive as it scurried around the tubes with a geck hot on its trail, only to meet the jaws of another gecko as it rounded a corner. One gecko claimed one of the traps as his territory and would chase out any gecko that entered.
His only problem was cleaning. The tubes got dirty rather quickly and were difficult to clean. The whole thing had to be disconnected and cleaned with a pipe brush.A tedious process but worth it in his eyes for the enjoyment of the animals and the pleasure he derived from watching them explore in their playground.
Id like to say I have no idea if this is harmful to the animals in some way. They seemed to suffer no ill effects from running around in the tubing but I dont know if something "bad" could happen.
You may be right in thinking that a habitral set up might not work for iguanas, certainly not adults. But smaller lizards, especially those with the ability to climb glass, seemed to like it.
BTW if I see a new product called Hab-IG-Trails appear on the market,I'll know where it came from ;)
