: And it's so very nice to see a discussion that could go really badly go so nicely!
: Alot of people buy the wrong animals for themselves and thier families (a lone elderly lady in an apartment with a CHOW CHOW!!! It happens!) It's up to us knowledgeable iguana owners to educate the general public about the realities of iguana ownership, be it through an established group like NIAD, or a local rescue group, or through individual interaction with pet stores and other owners. It's a long, long, road, and I don't know if there will EVER be an end, but more people that know are more people who can share thier knowledge. Keep sharing your knowledge!!!!

I dunno all that much about the pet walloper business, but don't they have an association that most reputable dealers belong to? And couldn't that organization at least try to get it's members to inform their customers as to exactaly what sort of animal they think they want?
All the dealer has to do is hand out a simple piece of paper with a couple of paragraphs ending with: THIS THING GETS 6' LONG, HAVE CLAWS LIKE BUTCHER KNIVES, AND WILL BE STRONG AS AN OX!! or something to that effect.
It seems to me that in order to maintain a good rep, a dealer would want to be honest with his customers. Then they might shine on the Ig and go for a higher $$ Bearded, or at least something small and cute that will stay that way. And with a care sheet, the animal would stand a chance of having a good home.
I think it would kick hell out of the demand for mass-produced Iguanas and eventually open up a reasonable market for domestic CBs.
I have a friend who breeds King and Red Rat snakes and ships the offspring all over the country. He mostly makes enough to pay for his hobby and put a little beer money in his pocket. A few weeks ago, he was telling that the market for Kings has gone right down the tubes except for Albinos (ugh!). Sez also the Rat snake market is going the same way. Too many breeders. Nobody wants Kings and Rats any more. Evolution rules!
Now that I have started paying attention, it seems that I cant turn around for stumbling over an Iguana or hearing an Iguana horrer story. I think it would only take a small push to see the Ig decline as a sought after pet.
Maybe Evolution can be nudged ahead just a little.
