The bottom line....there is a major problem with how many iguanas are in the US (PERIOD). Now, breeders(US) and herp people don't want the government to step in and make importing of iguanas illegal, because they don't think they will stop there....OK there goes doing anything about the wild breeding farms! Now, U.S. breeders think that they shouldn't have to stop breeding because they are not the ones causing the problems, it's the importers and uneducated people, OK guess there's nothing to be done there! Now...the petstores.....they don't want to hand out a sheet that tells people just what they are getting into......due to the fact that they would lose a sale! ( this is based on National stores) and I will address the issue of cost of iguanas and BDs later on a different post.
Now...uneducated people.....here's something....people ( rescue groups and others) spend their time trying to get the information to these people. Let's say a group educates a 1,000 people....one month later there's a 1,000 more uneducated people to take their place. New uneducated people continuously get into owning a iguana. That battle will go on for years to come.....Now, speaking of the problem with dogs....( Q ) Has that problem ever been fixed??? Still there is more uneducated dog owners out there allowing their dogs to have puppies, which alot get put to sleep at the pound!!!! You can educate til you're blue in the face.....and you might scratch the surface!!!! No......the uneducated buyers won't fix it. Hummm what's left????? I think I covered everything everyone here has talked about and still no answers!! Except.....just maybe....if ALL of the above would DO.....their part then just maybe we could get ahold of the problem and get it turned around the right direction!!!
Yes I.....will blame all of the above.....and the reason I feel that way.....it's because I feel I am doing above and beyond what I should be doing.....how many can say that??? I have rescue igs, I'm in a rescue group, I'm in the local NIAD group, I'm also a active member in two Herp clubs in VA.. I also promote this forum over the internet as much as possible to "New" NOT so educated iguana owners. But all in all, do I really feel like I'm doing enough??? NO, there's much more to do like visiting schools and educating kids and parents, having booths at Petstores and malls, so that's what I will be involved in this fall....just alittle more donated to the iguana problem!!!! THIS CAT ISN'T SITTIN" ON HIS A$$ !!!!!!
Thank you for much!
HD
PS.....yes take some time and really look at what you are doing for the cause!!!! Please do!
PSS. I'd love to hear any suggestions on how to go after the iguana mills (importers).....I've sat for hours thinking about it and have talked with many people about it....still nothing except trying to get a law passed....but no one wants that!
