The main problem with oyster shell is not because it's because it's high in animal protein (because it's actually not animal protein in the least, it's pure calcium carbonate.)

It's bad because the shell filters the sea water, which is full of impurities, and the impurities are retained in the shell. I do agree, however, that oyster suppliments are bad news. I *believe* that I found this information in Frye's book, and Donaghue mentioned it as well. I'll have to go thru Mader's book and see if he says anything about the subject. I'll write back later with some direct quotes.

Nothing in Mader, and I cannot find anything in Frye.
I find this discussion interesting because I have been using oyster shell based calcium suppliments for years with all my reptiles, and there have been no side effects or complications. I started using it as a suppliment on the recommendation of my herp vets.
If anyone find any references, good or bad, please post them. I will continue to search also.
