Why Hybrids? (not a flame, just an open-ended question)

I'm just curious, what is the appeal of hybrids? This is not a flame, although I realize this is probably a very old debate here! =) If someone wants to point me to some pro-hybrid articles I would love to read them as well.

There was a debate about hybrids on the unmentionable forum and I'm just very curious to find out more information.
