I'm a little unclear on what you're saying here. Did you house the snakes in shoe boxes (I'm assuming like plastic sterilite type boxes) with a paper towel substrate?

Did you leave the paper towels in when you sprayed? Did you have the snakes in the same room as the boxes when you sprayed and did you spray in a well ventilated area? Maybe if you can give a better description of the enclosures it would help...
