The next day, I brought the boxes back to the snake room and returned the snakes and water bowls back. The rubbermaid shoe boxes have 1/8" holes in the sides and in the lid.
:6 total snakes. 3 out of 4 hognose passed in 24 hours. The last one and the two pueblans were put into other non sprayed shoe boxes and they seem to be doing ok. The plastic shoe boxes holding the dead hognose seem to be dry.
The only thing I can think of is that if you sprayed the paper towels, they retained traces of the chemicals and if they got wet after the snakes were reintroduced maybe the snakes were exposed to the re-wetted chemicals? I don't own hognoses and haven't done alot of research on them - maybe they have a sensitivity that the pueblans don't have.
I wouldn't spray the paper towels with the Provent-a-mite in the future though. As long as you use fresh paper towels I think chances are slim that the towels are harboring mites so there should be no need to disinfect them.
I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Maybe someone with more experience with hognoses can provide some insight into whether they're more sensitive to chemicals, etc.
