Carpet for substrate

I'm making an enclosure for a garter snake and what do you think of the use of indoor/outdoor carpet ? Aint that a little rough on their belly ??? Also if i use sphagnum moss over paper aint the moss dusty ? its propbaly best to wash it before, but is there a danger that some small particle will stick to his food ?
