I'm no expert, but I use several layers of paper towels for small snakes. For my larger melanistic male, I am using oak leaves which have been fumigated and aired out. The large snake seems to be interested in the leaves - it makes for a more stimulating environment for him. That's my guess anyway. I had been using aspen litter, but I was concerned about the snakes ingesting shavings.

:I'm making an enclosure for a garter snake and what do you think of the use of indoor/outdoor carpet ? Aint that a little rough on their belly ??? Also if i use sphagnum moss over paper aint the moss dusty ? its propbaly best to wash it before, but is there a danger that some small particle will stick to his food ?
