....If she were disturbed by your cleaning, she would likely kill them all at once. If they are dying off one by one, my guess is that she either doesn't have enough milk or they have genetic abnormalities. This is not uncommon for first litters. If it happens again on subsequent litters, you might consider keeping 3-4 females together. If one has insufficient supply, the babies will still survive, because they nurse each others pinks.

I keep young moms and new litters on 1/2 Gentle Touch (an aspen pellet) and 1/2 aspen shavings. It takes at least ten days to get even a hint of odor. The rest are on other substrates, and require every 5 days.
