mice dying

a few weeks ago Lemiwinks gave birth to 12 live pinkies... now i have 5 left. i have to clean their cage at least twice a week. it is absolutely necessary. after that the cage smells so horrible that no one in the house can stand it. and to clean their cage, i have to handle them. will she not accept the babies back because they smell like me? i expected a few babies to die but not 7 of the 12... it really pisses me off... this is my first attempt at breeding mice, btw.. any thoughts on this? dave
