Megan,
There are some over the counter-type mite killers. Unlike some, I freely admit that I do not know everything there is to know about herps.

In the past, I've used Vapona bars (originally known as Shell No-Pest Strips). They are available the through feed stores. But be careful, the bars contain carcinogens.
