ball pythons and cats getting along?

Does anyone know if a full grown python will try to attack a cat? I do have a cat and I am getting a snake soon....My cousin used to have a Bermese python and he said it tried going after his dog. But is that because the snake was 9 feet long and it thought it COULD swallow it? or ? Or is it just instinctive to go after ANYTHING that moves? Even if you kept it well fed, would it still be inclined to go after it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
