Kyle,
I just wanted to warn you not to get too anxious about the hydei. I had always worked with melanogasters and thought I was doing something wrong when I wasn't getting production out of my hydei. It really does take about 4 weeks before a new culture starts producing flies. I have also read that taking only the first flies from the culture to set up new ones is a mistake because the first to pupate are almost all females. Just don't worry about how long it takes, your media should literally be crawling with larvae in 2-3 weeks. Oh, and it is REALLY nice to only have to feed 1/2-1/3 as many flies.

:Cool, I just bought my first hydei culture, and plan to start more as soon as this starts producing. I hope to then be able to cut back on the smaller ff's.

::Kyle,
::I have been using that exact recipe for a couple years with 1:1 water and vinegar and never had mold.
::By the way this recipe works exceptionally well for D. Hydei.

:::Ok I have just made a batch of FF medium based on this recipe:
:::1 cup of powdered sugar
:::8 cups potato flakes
:::1/2-1 cups of brewers yeast
:::active yeast on top of course
:::Ok here is the question, will 1/2 water 1/2 vinager be as good as 4 Teaspoons Methyl Paraben?
:::I have not had a problem with mold, with Carolina medium, and am now testing the above medium. I just wondered what results others have had.
:::Thanks,
:::Kyle
