I literally have so much larva they used up almost all the media before i had any hatch had to start adding a more media at the bottom they just produce so many larva.

I dont worry about them not producing enough for me though:)
I using Edsflymeat media

:Ya I am going looking forward to feeding a little less. I will still keep melanogasters cultures going, but just a few less. I think right now I have 12+ going, about 5 or so i'm feeding from. Thats only to feed 5 frogs, but I don't want to run out either. I make about 3 cultures a week of melanogasters, and I hope to drop that to 1, and 2 hydei.

:We will, and tanks for the input. I can already see larva in the Hydei, but I plan to wait until it is crawling with flies to make more.

::Kyle,

::I just wanted to warn you not to get too anxious about the hydei. I had always worked with melanogasters and thought I was doing something wrong when I wasn't getting production out of my hydei. It really does take about 4 weeks before a new culture starts producing flies. I have also read that taking only the first flies from the culture to set up new ones is a mistake because the first to pupate are almost all females. Just don't worry about how long it takes, your media should literally be crawling with larvae in 2-3 weeks. Oh, and it is REALLY nice to only have to feed 1/2-1/3 as many flies.

::Homer

:::Cool, I just bought my first hydei culture, and plan to start more as soon as this starts producing. I hope to then be able to cut back on the smaller ff's.

::::Kyle,
::::I have been using that exact recipe for a couple years with 1:1 water and vinegar and never had mold.
::::By the way this recipe works exceptionally well for D. Hydei.

:::::Ok I have just made a batch of FF medium based on this recipe:
:::::1 cup of powdered sugar
:::::8 cups potato flakes
:::::1/2-1 cups of brewers yeast
:::::active yeast on top of course

:::::Ok here is the question, will 1/2 water 1/2 vinager be as good as 4 Teaspoons Methyl Paraben?

:::::I have not had a problem with mold, with Carolina medium, and am now testing the above medium. I just wondered what results others have had.

:::::Thanks,
:::::Kyle
