:Hi,
there are approx 25 east asian Japalura species, the environmantal needs of which can differ vastly.
But most frequently imported are J. splendida and J. polygonata.
Both montane lizards and hence have quite special needs. Most imports were in very bad shape for a long time. Since last year or so, importers semm to have learned a bit about these lizards and imports are in better condition.
They are forest dwellers which hence need a humid setup with dense foliage and lots of nranches to climb. I think a 65g should be the least for a pair. They need a dryer and HOT basking spot (upper 90s) and showe best colours only under extreme bright lights. I strongly recommend to use metal halides and active uv heat bulbs. Very high humidity at nigth and in the Morning is important. Even more important is to have cool regions in the tank even at daytime and a significant temp drop, preferable down to the upper 50s at night. Good ventilation is also important, otherwise Japalura are quite prone to URI. Healthy Japalura are agile lizards with bird like behaviour. "Tame" specimens or specimens which spend much time in the water bassin are either ill or suffer from too high temperatures and the lack of cool nights. What I said applies to the montane species of the genus (Which are the only ones I have seen in imports so far). Nothing for beginners and lizards which need a close eye. The leowland species are much easier, but not available.
Hope that helps
Ingo
