:sorry to tell you this but the croaking doesn't mean they are male. All frogs that I know of anyway do have distress calls which could be what you heard. Leopard frogs and bullfrogs have memorable distress calls: snake having them by the leg is a noise I won't forget. Females also will make a differnt sound if they are at the breeding site having already laid eggs but a male jumps on looking for love. Males also have differnt sounds if that situation happens to them.
