Tortoises may not be social in the human sense but there is no doubt that some do benefit through the social interaction of groups. While I don't know of any studies that have been done this might be a subject looking into.
Two species immediately come to mind that obviously do well in groups are Galops and Aldabras. I always feel sorry for the lone giant tortoise when you see them at a zoo and then compare that to how they act in groups. There is definately something there. It surely adds a positive component when there is another present.
