I would suggest any of the Mediteranian species. The Ibera Greek Tortoise, Hermans Tortoise, Marginated Tortoise. I have kept a Greek Tortoise and have been very pleased with how hearty he is and how easy to keep. All of the above mentioned species can be found in captivity for $90-$150.00 each as hatchlings. Another option would be the RedFoot, YellowFoot, or CherryHead speceis which may be a little more difficult to keep but have a lot of personlity and are more outgoing and friendly. They are also in the same price range as hatchlings.
