: Hi;

: Was considering getting some Redfoots & was just wondering what size do these guys achive within the 1st year to 3 years?? Was planning on purchasing adults but may opt for hatchlings. Anybody want to list out the pros & cons of having hatchlings as opposed to adults?

I would definitely stay away from adults. Most adults you see advertised are imported, which means that they probably have disease. Even the ones that are advertised "Long Term Captive" are not a great idea. Long term to most of us is several years, but to someone trying to make money, could be just a few months. You will spend $100-150 for a captive bred hatchling, but odds are much greater for survival. Plus, you don't have to provide as much space and food. As far as growth goes, Redfoots grow very slowly. My hatchling is 10 months old and has grown almost 1 inch since I received it 8 months ago. This is normal growth, slow and steady. It usually takes them several years to get to breeding age, and probably at least 7 years to get to 10 inches in length. Any animal that is just a couple years old that is several inches long has probably been overfed and will have a shortened life span. To make a really long post short, get a captive bred hatchling! (besides, they're so cute!)
