Hello Derek. I live in NC also, and my "rule of thumb"
is that if it's sunny and the air temp is 60 degrees
or above, out he can go during the middle of the
day. Even a short time in natural sunlight is very
beneficial. (I've heard 15 mins.sun = 8 hours under
the "fake" lights). Anyways he's warm to the touch
and has a shelter to go into (remember they need
to be able to get out of the sun cause they get
warm fast). How big is your tort, mine's 10 pounds.
In cooler weather, I watch him and when he has had
enough sun (he's nice and toasty!), and heads into
his box, I usually bring him inside. If it's 70
degrees though I don't right away. He's always inside
now by 3 p.m. cause it cools down quickly after that.
I feed Mazuri tortoise food as an additional food
and the only "supplement" I use is Cuttlebone which
I scrape off onto it, works great. I have an Active
UV 160 watt also, though we aren't using it yet.
Another thing I do, is use his outside time to feed
him, by putting a head of escarole or chickory out
there and he goes to town on it.
Where are you at in NC, I'm in Fayetteville, which
is ususally the hottest spot in NC! thankfully! LOL!
