I am forced to disagree with a few opinions here. One is that Egyptians are not personable. Mine are very friendly, they will walk up to people and beg for food. I have heard from others as well that this is a personable species. They are not shy at all. However a sick tortoise may act shy. True this is definately a delicate animal, but also a very rewarding one for an experienced keeper. Spiders torts should be in the same boat as Egyptians in regards to hardiness. They are not a good choice, since all availlable specimens are currently wild caught. I just got done treating one of my byrgooi for a respiratory infection.
My egyptians tend to eat more than my spiders. Keith, if you are looking for your first tort, look for a cb hermans, cb russian, or cb greek.
