: I am forced to disagree with a few opinions here. One is that Egyptians are not personable. Mine are very friendly, they will walk up to people and beg for food. I have heard from others as well that this is a personable species. They are not shy at all. However a sick tortoise may act shy. True this is definately a delicate animal, but also a very rewarding one for an experienced keeper. Spiders torts should be in the same boat as Egyptians in regards to hardiness. They are not a good choice, since all availlable specimens are currently wild caught. I just got done treating one of my byrgooi for a respiratory infection.
: My egyptians tend to eat more than my spiders. Keith, if you are looking for your first tort, look for a cb hermans, cb russian, or cb greek.

Thanks for the info.
My main concern is really the size of the tortoise.
The Greeks seem to get a little big (I've read they
can get larger than 12"). The Hermans all get rave
reviews, but what is their largest size?
The Eqyptians all seem to stay pretty small, and I think they're
starting to be available as captive bred.

If I wasn't too concerned about size, I'd go for a Red Foot.

Thanks again,

KeithD
