: Hi Matt,
: how do you house the tortoise?
: Can you explain the set up for us.
: Does it have UV lighting, a must for indoor torts.
: If it's outdoors, could be that it's too damp , Russian torts can't tolerate damp conditions, they like it dry.
: Damp conditions can cause shell problems ,shell rot and skin infections.
: How long have you had the tortoise and has it been to a vet yet?
: A vet visit is very important for Russian tortoises. Most are wild caught and endure horrific conditions from the time of capture until they finaly go to a new home.
: They must endure overcrowding in packing crates, temperature extremes and often go for long periods of time without food or water.
: These terrible conditions during capture, shipping, holding etc can bring on all sorts of health problems.
: That's why a vet visit including stool test is so important for new ( recent imports) Russian torts.
: If you're worried I would take it to a vet. Shell problems can cause infections which might need antibiotics, if the infection enters the blood without antibiotics it can prove fatal.
: See the link below for more info.
: Hope this helps,
: Terry.
I house him in a 4 foot by 2.5 foot pen made of hardware cloth and wood, he was with an ig until i read yourpost, i think whats wrong is that it was too humid for the tortoise because i was spraying the iguana frequently. I seperated them now. Yes heis housed indoors but only for winter and he is taken out for a few hours a day to get natural light. I feed him collard greens, bell pepper, apple, mango, carrots and peas with a little variation here and there. I have had him for almost a year and he was captive born, i have not taken him to a vet though. If his condition doesnt improve by next wednesday i'll call my vet to make an appointment. I washed the affected area with antibacterial soap and i now have him on dry newspaper by himself in a 30 gallon tub with a spotlamp overhead. I'll post again tommorrow with further info.
