Mineral oil on torts...

I have two leopard torts that I have had for a few years and they are doing great. By chance I net a guy at work of all places that also has a leapord tort. Come to find out he is washing hos tort every week with mineral oil. Is this not a bad idea? I told him he was crazy, however he claims he has read this in several locations. Do any of you do this sort of thing? I soak mine in water every 4-5 days or so but other than that they are in the sun and munching on grass.

Thanks for your input. If he is messin up I want to tell him and be educated about it when I do
