In Reply to: Russian Tortoise - Picky eater or is it the heat? posted by Leslie on August 07, 2000 at 11:37:40:
Info I have read indicates that in their natural settting,
Russian torts do slow down when the temperature
goes over 85F. Is he kept in a place where
he has no place to go that is cooler than 85?
If so, he'll probably dig in somewhere and
lay low until it cools off.
When I first got each of my Russians, they
did the same thing: 1) Eat like there
was no tomorrow 2) Then level off.
They are stressed out and underweight from
being imported and kept in the petshop. They'll
eat until they catch up, and then just eat
to maintain. Monitor his weight and make
sure he doesn't lose say, 10% of his weight.
No need to run to the vet now. If he's eating
and pooping and moving around, he's probably OK.
